Answer: We undertook the name change based on meetings with staffers dealing with health oversight responsibilities to whom “CPR” has a different connotation. And we were spending a lot of time in meetings overcoming the impression “CPR” has. We wanted to shift ourselves to much more of a lobbying group for premium/luxury tobacco products and that includes cigars. Plus, IPCPR is very long. The PCA is still very active in pipes. That said, 92%-97% of premium tobacco revenue is cigars. There would be no room for pipe tobacco without the cigar revenue. Question: Are pipes and pipe tobacco out now? When they switched to IPCPR I thought it was an attempt to distance themselves from cigarettes, so if they go with Premium Cigar Association, doesn't that at least imply that pipes will not be represented? Answer: No not necessarily in the name change in 07. The change from RDTA was made to get tobacco and dealers out of the name. We were losing the narrative when tobacco was equated with cigarettes. With the emphasis on cigars, pipes, luxury premium and all-natural tobacco products the narrative is being won. Tobacco is seen as evil because of bad acts by big tobacco (cigarettes). If the cigar industry dies, pipes go with it. Pipes are still very important. CPA stands apart from cigarettes and big tobacco. Question: Has the IPC PR Annual Convention settled permanently in Las Vegas? Answer: No. Our main challenge is finding a place where we can smoke. Smoking is part of the trade show. Our members like to walk off the show floor, smoke and grab a drink together and talk. It’s all very relationship driven. We have a multi-year contract with Sands Venetian. Ours is a relationship driven industry and we are exploring different areas including Florida, Tennessee, Louisville because of bourbon and cigars, that’s like chocolate and peanut butter, Dallas/Fort Worth area. We’re also looking at potentially holding the show at different times of the year. But it will be in Las Vegas for at least the next few years. Read more... REVIEW: Fat Bottom Betty (5” x 54) by Deadwood Tobacco Co./Drew Estate Written by CandidCigar (Brice Sykes) | This is a review of the Fat Bottom Betty from Deadwood Tobacco. The cigar is manufactured by Drew Estate at their Esteli, Nicaragua factory. It’s one of five vitolas in this Deadwood line. Other offerings include Sweet Alice (corona), Sweet Jane (figurado), Baby Jane (cigarillo) and Sweet Jane “A” (A-size). There is also a Deadwood Special Edition line. From the names of the cigars and the fact that Deadwood Tobacco is located in Deadwood, South Dakota—a Biker’s mecca—I must assume that’s the demographic for which marketing was searching. The Fat Bottom Betty is a big-ass robusto (5” x 54g). Sorry for the pun. I couldn’t help myself. She’s a thick robusto with an oily, reddish-hued, dark brown Connecticut broad leaf wrapper. The binder and filler are Nicaraguan. The foot is closed. There are a few bumps, but no obvious flaws. The sample squeezes just right and has a cold smell of fruit and barnyard. This cigar and blend came to the market in 2016 from Oettinger Davidoff. Joe and Mike Chiusano introduced their cigars and their brand in 1995 and created well-regarded cigars for 14 years. In 1997 they moved their production to Tabadom in the Dominican Republic where they joined forces with Henke Kelner of Davidoff. In 2009 Davidoff was acquired by Swiss lifestyle company Oettinger. REVIEW: Don Juan Calavera Maduro Toro Written by H311oLHD (Aaron Handlemann) | Danli Honduras Tobacos – Don Juan Calavera Maduro Toro (6x52) First Impressions: The Don Juan Calavera Maduro is another extension of the Don Juan Calavera line. Similarly, to the Sumatra line, the Maduro is dressed up with the same beautiful label and a piece of black tissue paper made to look like the calavera is wearing a tuxedo. The maduro is sold in a beautiful dress box of 10. I have said it before, but I really like the marketing behind this brand. Prior to this review, I enjoyed three samples of the maduro toro. Prelight: I’ve come to associate Danli Hnoduras Tobacos with high quality and great taste. The maduro line did not disappoint. Each sample passed the pinch test with flying colors, revealing no soft or hard spots. With each prelight draw, there was a little bit of resistance with extremely subtle flavors of grass. The maduro wrapper was milk chocolate brown, with few veins and almost no imperfections. Read more...
